In this second part we install some needed helper applications, VirtualBox guest utilities, as well as OpenBox. At this point we are still configuring the system outside of the GUI. But we will get OpenBox installed and running before the end.

JWM to OpenBox and XDM to Slim-Fork in Arch Linux

Introduction

Last week I was tinkering around with a new Arch Linux install when I noticed Joe’s Window Manager (JWM) was no longer in the main repository. Instead it was in the Arch user Repository (AUR).

This was a not so pleasant surprise and prodded me to check some other programs. One pleasant surprise was that when I looked up the SLIM Desktop manager (DM), it was not SLIM, but rather SLIM-Fork. (more…)

The X Display Manager (XDM) Part 2 Basic GUI

Introduction

In the last post we got x-windows up and working on our base arch install. This gives us a very basic GUI. Once we have x-windows working, we can move on to adding a Window Manager (WM), some helper programs as needed, some basic applications, and our Display Manager (DM). Please refer to the previous post to understand and set the base line from which we will proceed.
