Major Site Changes Coming

Published on March 13, 2024 at 8:24 pm by LEW

It is my intent to make some major changes to this site starting in three months (more or less).

I have noticed that I am posting less and less frequently. There are a variety of reasons for this. Heck, if it was just one or two reasons, it would be a simple fix.  Unfortunately this is not the case.

I have a lot of travel scheduled for the next few months. But once that is done I need to evaluate my priories when it comes to this site. And they have changed significantly since I started this site back in 2021.The world has also undergone much change over the years also. And one thing I have learned over the course of my life, change is neither good or bad, but it is unavoidable. And I find myself bowing to the winds of change more than I would like.

So what does the future look like? It is still unclear. However I do not think this site will go away. But I expect it will change significantly. I started this site to write about things that interest me. And that has also changed over the years, so it is no wonder that this site will be changing.

I have spun up a couple of local serves, and I am experimenting with,  and testing some new concepts. The site update will depend on the results of this work. At some point something will click with me, and the big change will occur.

Thank you for visiting, and  for taking the time to read this. And please, share your thoughts about this site, and the possible direction I should take with it.

Proxmox Storage

Published on February 2, 2024 at 3:50 am by LEW

Introduction

Proxmox is the proverbial onion metaphor. And to get a handle on how storage works, we need to peel back a few layers. We should expect some layered complexity in the storage model, after all we are dealing with requirements for both the host (main) application and all the guest application (Virtual machines and Containers) running under the host. Additionally the varying partition structures, drive arrays,  and file systems will also increase the complexity of the system. (more…)

Proxmox: Groups, Users, and Permissions

Published on January 31, 2024 at 7:08 pm by LEW

Introduction

When dealing with users in Proxmox there are a few items to be aware of that could be considered, at least in my opinion,  somewhat non standard. The first is the concept of Realms. And no, this has noting to do with fantasy gaming. We can consider Realms to be various methods of authenticating and validating user. We will need to first understand this concept before moving forward with user creation. (more…)

ProxMox Needed or Not?

Published on January 29, 2024 at 9:20 pm by LEW

Introduction

I have been worked with Proxmox for the past couple of weeks, and with libvert, directly and indirectly, for several weeks before that. And I now find myself asking this question. Are Virtual Machines (VM) and/or Containers really necessary? Because in many cases I am not seeing either an advantage or a need. And frankly, in some cases they are a hindrance and/or a liability. (more…)
