Introduction
The Tortilla has been around forever, and can be used almost everywhere. It is a flat unleavened type of bread made from various ground grains. This is my version of the Tortilla made from standard white (wheat) flour.
Ingredients (makes four 6” tortilla’s)
- 1 ¼ cup flour
- ¼ tsp salt (to taste)
- 3 tbsp shortening
- 1/3 cup warm water (variable as needed)
Equipment
- Medium mixing bowl
- Kitchen Stirring Spoon
- Frying pan
- Pastry cutter
- Rolling pin
- Spatula
Instructions
- Warm up the shortening until it just starts to melt.
- In a bowl add 1 cup flour and salt, then the 2 tbsp shortening. Use the pastry cutter to blend the shortening into the flour.
- Slowly add water to the bowl, mixing until a dough starts to form.
- Once the dough forms, dump it out on a floured surface and knead until smooth. Add additional flour/water as required to get a smooth non sticky dough.
- Cut the dough into four equal sections, and allow to rest for 15 minutes or so.
- Pre heat a frying pan on medium high, and grease lightly.
- On a floured surface using a floured rolling pin roll the dough out into a thin 6” circular shape.
- Place in frying pan and wait for it to start bubbling (about 1 minute), then flip and cook for another minute. Check the color and texture and adjust cooking times as needed.
Notes
- You can use any neutral oil or butter instead of shortening.
- You can easily increase the recipe for larger sizes or greater number of tortillas.
- You can add ¼ tsp of baking powder to make a slightly more fluffy tortilla.
- You can use a fork if you do not have a pastry cutter.
