Bold Orion Album CoverMost people have probably never listened to or appreciated one of my favorite songs of the 1980’s, Bold Orion on the Rise. I first heard this song in 1984 at a USO show when I was stationed in Northern Turkey. It was written by Leo Kretzner and Jon Bell back in the early 1980’s.

The song focuses on the changing of the seasons, and the constellation of Orion that can be seen in the winter skies. One can feel the timelessness of the constellation, skies, and seasons, as well as the temporary nature of man, in the words of the song.

Orion is a figure in Greek mythology, who was mentioned in Homers Iliad. There are many different versions of Orion’s story. Upon his death he was placed in the sky following the Pleiades and being followed by Scorpio.

I cannot say I have been impressed with some of the remakes I have listened too. I suggest first listening to the original, which can be found on line here.

I would classify this as one of the best songs that came out of the 1980s, and it is well worth the listen. It has a clear message that is as relevant today as it was back then.
